Buy Yourself a Beat
The moment. Someone asks you a direct question in a meeting and every face turns to you.
What most people do
Start talking immediately to fill the silence, then think out loud and ramble into a weak answer.
Why it misfires. Answering before you've thought means the first words are filler, and you back yourself into a corner. The pause you're afraid of is exactly what you need - it's where the good answer gets made.
The rewrite
"Good question - let me think about that for a second." (then a breath, then answer)
The move: pause before you answer. Buy one or two seconds out loud - repeat the question, say "let me think", or take a sip of water. It feels long to you and composed to everyone else.
Your turn
Next question you get, take one deliberate beat before your first word.
Edge cases. Repeating the question back ("so you're asking whether…") both buys time and makes sure you answer the right thing.
This week
Practise one visible pause before answering a question, instead of rushing in.
